Dear Sir/Madam,My name is MAO Ningyue, and I graduated from the
Chinese University of Hong Kong in Urban Design program
in August 2014, now I am an urban planner of China
Reconstruct Co., Ltd in Shenzhen. But for me, it is not
the first time for work. After getting a bachelor’s degree
of urban planning in 2012, I worked as an assistant urban
designer in the Hangzhou Branch Office of APCE Design
Co., Ltd in mainland China for almost two years.
Not only am I skilled in designing, but I also excel at
interpersonal relationships and communication because
I have a good personality. I’m willing to challenge
myself and drive for my personal breakthrough. While
working collaboratively on projects, I relish the sense of
teamwork and collective achievement.
For details, please refer to the attachments, including
my CV and portfolio. Looking forward to your reply
and being a member of this team. My available date is
Anytime! Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best wishes! MAO Ningyue

My design is about the sense of security
thst city give to us or its residents. My site
is a waterfront area infront of Sai Ying Pun
and Shek Tong Tsui, which is really close to
Sun Yet Sen memorial park. The planning
period is from now to 2047, the year Hong
Kong Special Administrative Region(HKSAR)
will dispear completely. By 2047, 50 years
after Hongkong handover in 1997, the
border will no longer exist. It also means
the end of "one country, two system"
policy. Under this circumstance, how do
people live? Where shall they go in next
decade?
The complication of political environment
may lead to a new wave of immigration.
Strengths--Relatively low rates & Vibrant surrounding
A: The land rate of Shuang Wan is higher than Sai Wan, and the gap between them is in-
creasing over time. Now there is western wholesale food market, tons of fresh fruits and veg-
etables were shipped here. So, there are already some quay facilities in site.
B: The Sun Yet Sen memorial park nearby is quite vibrant, people surrounding always regard
it as a perfect public space along the harbourfront, which provide a positive influence on my
site.
Weakness--Broken linkages
A: Breakage of connection between Western Wholesale Food Market area and Sun Yat Sen
Memorial Park, there is a narrow passageway between them.
B: Breakage of connection between harbourfront and residential area. Bad accessibility from
residential area to waterfront is caused by flyovers upon the Connaught Road West.
Opportunity--MTR is on its way & New wave of immigration is coming
A: The opening of West Island Line will lead to a prosperity of Sai Wan, more and more peo-
ple come to the west and bring more vibrancy.
B: There are many approaches and gateways for people to escape from Hong Kong in New Ter-
ritories but nothing in Hong Kong Island. With the coming immigration of new wave, a new exit
of Hong Kong is in great request.
Threats--Revitalize of the traditional culture & Need more true open space
Sai Ying pun, as one of the original residential area in Hong Kong Island, some traditional
commerial activities are still existing. But with the increasing rent of shop, the shopkeeper
can't afford it, they disappeared gradually.
Conclusion--Due to this situation, Sai Wan is more suitable for developing public facility like
the ferry terminal. In design, it is essential to open harbourfront area to the public, adding
more multiple functional area in which people to do diverse activities, meanwhile the revival of
the traditional culture need is also need to be considered.

Super Utopia in Modern Society--Three-dimensional maker community
Monotonous space
Due to the low rent of public house, living condition in Tin Shui Wai is not
good, architectural space of public house is quite simple as well as the
public space. Few cars come and go on the wide road along with light rail
train, passengers are elevated to the foot-bridge,there are hardly any
street activities in Tin Shui Wai.
Weak economy & High unemployment rate
Due to poor city planning, characterized by its homogeneity in terms of
land use, i.e.residential housing estates, TSW was originally planned as
bedroom community for Hong Kong workers but plans for labour intensive
industries nearby never materialized due to the rise of nearby industrial
cities in Guangdong province. This would explain why upwards of 80% of
the 270,000 residents are on social welfare.
Serious family & social issues
Packed with public housing estates, highly scarcity of communicating
space, high proportion of newly migrated family and aggregation of low-
income population, TSW has been dubbed the “city of sadness” for its high
rate of unemployment, indifferent neighborhood, suicides, and spousal and
child abuse.

3D maker community system
Focused on the core issue of job shortage,
based on the background of more peo-
ple less land in Hong Kong and the idea of
mixed-use as well as the wide application
of eco-industry like 3D printing and laser
cutting, this paper proposes a solution of
“three-dimensional maker community”, com-
posed by a plenty of maker neighborhood,
some training place, exhibition center and
stores or malls. All of them are organized
by a three-dimensional system which covers
social, economic and spatial development.
3D maker community system own a unique
3D coordinate system to deal with the exist-
ing problems, which consist of three strate-
gies in XYZ axis that stand for from idea to
exhibition, from making to consumption and
from private to public respectively.
Axis X: From idea to exhibition, In order to create an interactive community, the space for neighbor communication is in high demand. So this
axis can be regarded as sharing axis, represents the interaction in different level, which reflects different spatial typology like studio, work-
shop, classroom, gallery and exhibition center.
Axis Y: From making to consumption. This dimension is more related to the economy. The spectrum represents the business activities in differ-
ent proportion of input and output reflecting the different spatial typology such as studio, gallery, maker space, maker fair and super mall.
Axis Z: From private to public,Axis Z aims at creating diverse lifestyle, providing high-level of living & working spatial quality. The spectrum
of this dimension is defined by the quantity of traffic.Idea

commun ity is composed by three
clusters, the factory neighborhood is in
north, mainly formed by SOHO as well
as workshp and training space, which
is responsible for R&D,. The middle
part is for exhibition and cooperation,
there is a convention & exhibition hall.
The southern part is developed as a
new town center with high-end office
building and shopping mall, since its
location is quite near to Tin Shui Wai
MTR station.

Application & Development prospect
From the Diagram on the right, we can clearly fig-
ure out three strategies behind the deisgn. That
is the resonable organiztion of 3D maker commuty.
This scheme is aimed at solving the issue of employ-
ment in new towns, but it still can be promoted to
some other fields like urban renewal project.
As a consequence, with the development of this new
community mode, those would-be entrepreneurs and
inventors are no longer at the mercy of large com-
panies to manufacture their ideas, and those low-
end blue-collar workers are starting to hunger for
life making something that starts virtual but quickly
becomes tactile and usable in the everyday world.
The quest for “reality” ends up with making real
things.

Notes
I explain my portfolio from three elements- function, space and culture, because
I think compared with form, space is a wider concept. And the structure of a city is
definitively decided by its immanent gene. It’s a kind of modelling thing. Culture is
the core skeleton of city development, as well as the charm of city lives. It needs to be
abstracted and presented from different design ways. These three elements may not
be the most central point of planning while they are the most characteristic points.
Maybe my understanding is still immature, here I show something that I have learnt.
Function- the main force of design
Space- the beauty of design
Culture- the charm of design
I have been asking myself for several years
since my getting into this field, that what
the main part of planning was. I used to read
many advanced theories of masters and among
these theories, I preferred Mr. Wu Liangyong’s
Science of Human Settlement, whose main idea
was people-oriented.
Here I choose several works of mine for dem-
onstration purposes. I put some of my original
or current thoughts into them and present
them in three parts.
 My understanding of design:

Function
Element 1
I think function is the most important element in urban planning.
Nowadays the “function” is no longer a simple functional subregion.
It emphasizes compound and various functions. I choose Concept
Planning and Landscape Design of Waterfront Area in Qu River,
Quzhou, Urban Design of the Western District, Zhenghe, Fujian
Province these two projects to expound this element from differ-
ent emphases.
Concept Planning and Landscape Design of Waterfront Area in Quriver, Quzhou Urban Design of the Western District,Zhenghe,Fujian Province
This project is located in the west side of Zhenghe
County. It is the main orientation of city development
in the future. It is a typical urban design of a new city
center.
In the design, besides considering the new center’s
function installation of a traditional city, we highlight
the leading function of important functional facilities
such as transport station to the development of new
district

Project Location in Zhenghe
This project is located in the north side of Qu River,
Qujiang District, Quzhou City. As an uncultivated
land, this land is always used as a distant view land
and never has a specific functional position.
In the design, we make an overall consideration of
waterfront area and consider to ensure the industry
development strategy of waterfront area by analyz-
ing the industry development tendency from a wider
perspective, then ensure its functional position.

Concept Planning and Landscape Design of Waterfront Area in Qujiang,Quzhou
Urban design in a large scale: functional position under the strategic planning
General Layout
Owing to lack of the guidance
to the function of waterfront
block from upper planning, the
whole planning analyzes from
Quzhou even western Zhejiang.
Leisure industry will be the
main direction of industrial de-
velopment and Qujiang District
will be the forerunner. Wa-
terfront area will be the best
landing point of this develop-
ment.
(1) Immiting creation
           Enhancing integration
(2) Guidence of double cores
       Interaction of eight nodes
Through industrial guidance, planning uses the functional strategy of “creation, integration, double cores, eight nodes ” to realize the city’s space development
across the river and vigor construction along the river.

Urban Design of the Western District,Zhenghe,Fujian Province
The mesoscale level urban design: functional construction of typical new city center
As a typical urban design
of city center, the western
district of Zhenghe County
will become administrative,
cultural and economic center
of Zhenghe County in the
future.
Compared with the func-
tional strategy of the first
project in Quzhou the scale
of this is relatively small. It
mainly reflected in the re-
finement and quantization of
functional position of upper
planning.
General Layout
A. Through the different functional arrangement, West-
ern District forms a good cooperation relationship with
economic development area and old urban area.
2、Functional strategy—— make use of abundant resources creatively and catalyze the development of city

Space is the core of urban plan-
ning that I am obsessed all the
time. During my work period, I
was given more exposure to ur-
ban designs of different levels and
scales, and had a new understand-
ing about Space.
I choose Urban Design of Dut-
ouyang District, Zhenghe County,
Fujian Province and Landscape De-
sign of Damiaoping Square, Shuiji
Town, Jianyang City, Fujian Prov-
ince these two projects to ex-
pound this element from different
emphases.
Space
Element 2
The scale of this planning is smaller than the
planning in Quzhou. In the process of design, in-
stead of only paying attention to the construction
of whole system, I lay more stress on the detail
control of different space elements such as street,
square and height. This design can guide directly
the specific design of next level.
This project is located inside the old area of Shuiji
Town. Now it is the most important public activity
space in the town.
Client company’s inclination: demolish the cinema
in the Damiaoping Square, broaden the area of
square and integrate more activity area.
Space design considers more in the relationship
between citizen’s daily life and engineering scale.

Urban design in a small scale: specific control of space element
In this design, space design mainly focuses on the control guidance of specific space element. Combined with space landscape system, analyzing space elements
from texture and place, route and interface and district these three subsystems.
1、Texture and place
Texture and place usually indicates the puncti-
form element.

3、District
District usually indicates the area pattern of city space. Space combination of different height lays emphasis on the space harmony of each other.
20
The total area of this square is around 3.000 square meters.
Considering future construction of Municipal Plaza, combined
with surrounding environment, this project is constructed in 3
stages.
This design plan is finished independently by me. I retain most
original manuscripts. I integrate my design into whole block,
then use sketchup to refine the interior space.
