October Progress Report
Prepared: October 17, 2014
Student Name: Tsz Ching (Kimberly) Wong Student ID: 141201378
Grade: Grade 9
Homeroom Teacher: Adrian Baker
Dear KIS Families,
The progress report you have received is intended as a tool to support you in discussing with your child their academic
progress and achievement. The grades in this report represent a snap shot of perceived current academic achievement
within the first nine weeks of the semester. The report is a great opportunity for reflection and goal setting. We strongly
encourage families to discuss with their children with each report, their student’s perceived strengths and weaknesses,
as well as reasons for success and failure. When students extend their reflections beyond solutions like “working
harder” to using strategies like setting goals that are “SMART” – specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-
bound – they can build on success, address weaknesses, and move in a positive direction toward achieving their
goals. Please ensure that you bring your child’s report card to your Parent-Teacher Conferences so you can continue
this dialogue with your child’s teachers.
Please be reminded that grades awarded on the December and June report are used in evaluating students standing
with scholarships, and are used in calculating students’ grade point averages for Grades 9-12, as part of the university
application process.

Reading Your Child's Report Card
Evaluation is based on IB criteria as it relates to the student’s curricular performance. The evaluation does not indicate
standing in the group. Mid-term progress reports should be brought to Parent-Teacher Conferences. Secondary School
students receive four reports per year. The mid-term reports in October and March are progress reports which should
be used for goal setting. These grades should be seen as judgments of what a student’s performance looks like so far,
with in many cases what would be considered incomplete data. Semester reports are summative reports, and are
based upon more extensive data collection across the full grading period. Progress reports do not impact a student’s
scholarship status and the grades are not included in the content or the calculation of grades on the high school
transcript for university applications. The reports issued in December (Semester 1) and June (Semester 2) are
summative and these grades are used on transcripts and for reviewing a student’s scholarship status. All KIS students
are enrolled for the ultimate purpose of earning a KIS High School Diploma as a secondary school credential and the
school-based reports determine that. The IB Diploma and/or Certificates are awarded independently through the IB’s
separate external assessment process which is scored by the IBO. For more detailed information regarding KIS
graduation policy, the IB’s policy for awarding IB Diplomas, and/or information regarding how MYP and DP grades
affect university admission, please visit the following link: http://bit.ly/16Dhgz6

Darryl Anderson
EE
Kimberly has demonstrated an advanced level of factual knowledge and conceptual understanding in our first unit on Revolutions.
Her homework answers have consistently been thoughtful, detailed and well-organized. Although Kimberly has demonstrated
excellent organization and critical thinking skills in her written work, sometimes her ideas are unclear because she needs to
improve her grammar and spelling. Kimberly also needs to improve her communication skills by contributing more often to class
discussion.
Sciences: Sciences
James Park (Park) Eason
EE
Kimberely continues to make great improvements at KIS. Her English skills are good and improving rapidly, this allows her to better
and more deeply engage science concepts. In class Kimberely often volunteers her opinion in class and is a strong active member
of any group. Kimberely has good organizational and study skills and I would like to see her continue her level of effort. With
continued hard work Kimberely will continue to improve, she is great to have in science class.
Mathematics: Mathematics
Richard Erwin (Rick) Butterfield
EE
Kimberly is one of my top-performing students, and she has done very well this term in mathematics—scoring above average on
her summative examination (Number System Unit). Kimberly is setting the pace, with a little help from her friends, in Myimaths. She
meets coursework deadlines, and her work is high quality. I see her making big improvements in mathematics during this school
year. Areas in need of some improvement: indices, and rounding numbers.
Arts: Visual Arts
Patrick (Pat O.) O'Connor
ME
Kimberly used some specific vocabulary to show her understanding but missed many opportunities. She showed adequate
knowledge of Chinese pots and their traditional designs. Her skills developed and improved during the unit and she had a
successful pot. It could have been smoothed out a lot more. But the construction is solid and the design, although not too clear,
has glaze applied well. She offered limited alternatives for her designs. This can be improved. The pot accurately reflects the
chosen culture and she had an adequate evaluation of her skills.
Physical and health education: PHE
Sandra Blair
ME
In Physical Education Grade 9 have been learning about striking and fielding, and how interpersonal skills can affect a team.
Kimberly has made a good start to the year. She works well in teams and has participated willingly in all activities.
Design: Design
Tim Cabrera
ME
In Design, the updated design cycle is being used as a guide to review students' time and file management skills and to strengthen
those skills in preparation for next year's personal project. The result will be documentation of their research and the creation of a
product or system that they can use to maintain, or improve, their skills. Kimberly has submitted a draft of the document for review
and is using class time effectively to produce her document.

Aaron Thomas (Aaron) Kolius
ME
Comments: Kimberly has strong speaking and listening skills. She uses a good range of vocabulary in conversations, has good
pronunciation, and understands oral instructions. When writing, she logically organizes information and uses a wide range of
vocabulary and sentence structures but has room to improve her grammar. She understands main ideas and supporting details in
reading texts and can accurately follow written instructions. Kimberly will begin attending G9 English on October 9.
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE9B)
Philomena Margaret Josephine (Philomena) Chipman
N/A
Comments: After an initial introductory period, PSHE this quarter has focused on working against bullying by Empowering the
Bystanders. We focused on research regarding the Circle of Bullying and the various roles that students take when a bullying event
occurs. Students went on to devise what strategies to help negate any bullying behaviors they witness i.e. speaking out against
bullying behaviors and befriending the target of those behaviors, or calling an adult for assistance when necessary.
Thai Studies (THAIS9B)
Korapin (Tuk) Karunpak
ME
Comments: Students have studied special Thai events/holidays and inquired into Thai celebrations that were of personal interest.
Kimberly has been trying hard and showing her efforts in doing her work. She did well on her research as she provides sufficient
information for her presentation. However, in order for her to become a more efficient communicator, she needs to make sure that
she has mentioned all relevant information from her presentation. Way to go, Kimberly.
